Buttercup Sprig
White on Buttercup

I wanted the brightest breakfast-room wall I could make: white buttercups and primroses on a full buttercup-yellow ground, like a tablecloth on a May morning.

The sprigs come in pairs on short stems with toothed leaves, buds next to open flowers, tossed in a half-drop so no stripe ever forms. White, cream and deep green in a flat gouache look with crisp edges and a slightly naive touch; the deep green leaves keep the yellow from shouting. I see it in a sunny dollhouse kitchen with a blue-and-white jug on the table, and it is just right for a breakfast room.
