Buttercup Sprig
Yellow on Sage

I wanted buttercups as they look on a hedge bank in spring: bright yellow flowers and white primroses scattered over a pale sage ground.

Each sprig is a pair on a short stem with toothed olive leaves, a bud beside an open flower, tossed in a half-drop so the wall never falls into rows. Buttercup yellow, white and olive in a flat gouache look with crisp edges and a slightly naive touch, on a sage soft enough to stay calm. I picture it in a country dollhouse kitchen around an old scrubbed table, and it brings the same spring light to a breakfast room.
