I wanted a floor with the depth of a gemstone, so I chose malachite: polished green stone ringed with wavy bands of emerald, deep green and pale mint.
The bands swirl into loose eyes and ripples, six to eight groups in each repeat, spread evenly with no bull's-eye in the centre. The sheets butt edge to edge and the stone carries on with no visible join, like one slab with no joints. The stone is seen flat in soft, even light. I picture it in a library, before a fireplace or in a Victorian parlour.
