I wanted the violets and pansies that grow in a shady corner of a cottage garden: small purple and blue faces with yellow eyes, scattered over a clean white ground.
Each little flower turns its face its own way, with heart-shaped sage leaves beside it, so the wall has the easy look of a real flower bed. Violet, blue, yellow and sage in a flat gouache look with crisp edges and a slightly naive touch, crisp on the white. I see it in a dollhouse bathroom around a white rolltop bath, and it is just as sweet in a cottage bedroom.
