I kept thinking of a birch wood after a snowfall, so I lined the wall with slim white trunks marked in black, snow resting on a few branches and big flakes drifting down between them.
Five trunks stand in each repeat, each one rising the full height of the pattern, and the sheets butt edge to edge so the grove carries on with no visible join. The ground is a pale grey-white and the palette keeps to white, black and silver grey, in flat gouache-style colour with crisp edges and a slightly naive brush. I imagine it in an entrance hall or a quiet bedroom through the winter months.
