I wanted the floor every grand entrance seems to have: black and white marble laid as a checkerboard, polished smooth, each square with its own movement of grey veins.
No two squares share the same veining, and the veins stop at each tile edge, as they would on cut stone, with very thin joints between the tiles. The sheets butt edge to edge so the checkerboard carries on with no visible join. The stone is seen flat and straight on, in soft even light, with fine crystalline detail and no glare. I see it in a grand hall, a bathroom or a dollhouse ballroom.
