Elderberry Hedgerow
Bottle Green

I wanted the hedgerow as autumn turns: elderflower umbels, clusters of dark berries, long serrated leaflets and a few red rose hips, all on a deep bottle-green ground.

Large sprays cross the tile at alternating angles, dense but with the dark ground showing between them, so the wall feels full without losing its rhythm. Sage leaves, cream umbels, black-purple berries and red hips are cut in flat colour, like an Arts and Crafts woodblock print. I picture it in a dollhouse dining room, where the green makes candlelight and dark wood glow.
