On charcoal, my elderberry hedgerow turns quiet and a little mysterious, like the hedge at dusk, with only the cream flowers and red hips catching the light.
The drawing is the same: elder umbels, dark berry clusters, long serrated leaflets and a few rose hips, in large sprays that cross the tile at alternating angles with ground showing between them. Here the leaves are grey-green, the umbels cream, the berries plum and the hips red, all in flat colour like an Arts and Crafts woodblock print. I imagine it in a dollhouse study lined with books, or a snug library with a single lamp on the desk.
