I wanted a Halloween paper a child could fall asleep under: small smiling ghosts with round black eyes, drifting among tiny stars and crescent moons on a soft dove-grey ground.
Each tile holds about nine ghosts, set in staggered half-drop rows that turn one way, then the other, with plenty of plain grey between them so no two ever touch. I kept the palette to white, charcoal and pale yellow, in flat colour with crisp edges and a slightly naive, gouache-like touch, with no shading at all. I picture it in a dollhouse nursery or a child's bedroom, friendly rather than frightening, and sweet enough to stay on the walls once Halloween is over.
