Christmas baking was my starting point: gingerbread men and women piped with white icing, marching across a soft brick-red wall with little iced hearts and round peppermint candies between them.
I kept the figures few and large, about nine to a tile, set in staggered rows that face one way and then the other, with enough plain red around each so they read clearly even at 1:24. Everything is flat gouache colour in gingerbread brown, white and cream, with crisp edges, a slightly naive brush and no shading. I see it behind the stove of a dollhouse kitchen or on the walls of a little bakery.
