I wanted the kind of tartan that means Christmas at a glance: wide red squares crossed by dark green and navy bands, picked out with thin lines of yellow and white.
The bands run perfectly straight, horizontal and vertical, with the crisp look of woven cloth, and each tile carries the sett twice so the check stays even from corner to corner. I picture it in a living room by the fireplace, or in a study made ready for the holidays.
