I wanted the thistles of a Highland roadside in August, the way an Arts and Crafts printer would have cut them: upright stems with spiky slate-blue bracts and purple heads, standing on a cream ground.
The stems rise in a half-drop with spiny grey-green leaves, and small bluebells fill the gaps between them, so the wall reads as an orderly field rather than a tangle. Slate blue, purple and grey green in clean outlines and a limited palette of flat colour, calm against the cream. I see it in a dollhouse study with a tartan armchair, and it suits a cottage bedroom or a bathroom just as well.
