I wanted Highland Thistle to stand tall: upright thistle stems with spiky bracts and spiny leaves, and a few bluebells filling the gaps, all on a soft heather-pink ground.
About sixteen thistles share each repeat, set in a half-drop so the stems step gently across the wall instead of lining up. The heads are purple, the leaves sage, with touches of cream, in flat colour with clean outlines and no shading, in an Arts and Crafts spirit. The pink ground stays warm and quiet, and I see it in a cottage bedroom or a small bathroom.
