Limestone and Slate

I wanted the floor of a French château entrance: honed pale limestone octagons with small black slate squares set on the point between them.

This is the classic cabochon layout, each little dark square sitting where four octagons meet, all on a regular grid. The sheet edges run through the middle of the stones, never along a joint, so the sheets are laid edge to edge and close back into whole stones. Pale limestone, cream and black slate with a subtle honed grain, printed flat on matte paper with no shine, varnish or shadow. I picture it at the foot of the stairs in a grand dollhouse hall, and it suits an orangery or a manor kitchen too.
