Majolica Kitchen
Olive and Terracotta

I wanted the kind of glazed tiles you picture above an Italian kitchen stove: olive green and terracotta leaves curling around a small lemon-yellow centre, on a warm cream glaze.

Four identical tiles make one repeat, two by two, and where four tiles meet their leaves close into a wreath, so the wall reads as one continuous tiled surface. The brushstrokes are confident, the glaze slightly uneven, the grout lines thin and even, all seen perfectly flat with no shine and no shadow. The sheets are laid edge to edge, with no visible join. I see it as a backsplash in a dollhouse kitchen, or as a tiled dado in a little trattoria.
