I wanted the toy box of a Christmas morning on the wall: wooden soldiers in tall hats and red coats standing guard, with small rocking horses and drums tucked between them.
The soldiers stand in staggered rows on a cream ground, about eight motifs to a tile, each turned the opposite way from its neighbour and given plenty of room. I limited the inks to red, navy, gold and black and aimed for the look of an old block-printed paper: crisp edges, flat colour and the slight unevenness of a vintage block print. I picture it in a nursery full of toys, or in a living room dressed for the holidays.
