This one started with the smell of a Christmas kitchen: dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks tied in pairs, star anise and little sprigs of pine, scattered over a warm cream ground.
About ten motifs share each tile, spaced in staggered half-drop rows and turned in alternate directions, with open cream around each so nothing crowds. The colours are those of the ingredients, orange, cinnamon brown and pine green, in flat colour with crisp edges and a slightly naive gouache touch. I imagine it in a dollhouse kitchen during the holidays, behind a dresser of plates, or in a dining room laid for a winter supper.
