I wanted a floor that feels warm underfoot in a farmhouse kitchen: wide knotty pine boards running the length of the room, golden and honey-toned, with a few small brown knots.
Four boards run across each repeat, and every board has one butt joint, set at staggered heights so no two neighbouring joints line up. The knots are small and evenly spread, and the colour stays the same at the edges as in the middle, so nothing gives the repeat away. The wood has a satin finish and a fine natural grain, with hairline joints between the boards, seen flat and straight on. The sheets are laid edge to edge, with no visible join. I also picture it in a cottage bedroom or under the slope of an attic.
