I wanted a Victorian paper with some warmth in it, so I set peacock-teal scallops on a terracotta ground, each fan holding a small palmette and fine engraved lines in cream.
The scallops overlap in offset rows like roof tiles and cover the whole wall, with a palmette centred in every scale. Flat colour and fine linework keep it crisp at a small size, in the manner of a Victorian printed paper. This colourway has a slightly oblong repeat. I picture it in a Victorian parlour warmed by the fire.
