I wanted a floor with the weight of a grand old house: square Versailles parquet panels in dark antique oak, each one framed and crossed by a lattice of interlaced squares.
Each panel has an outer frame with a diagonal lattice of interlaced squares inside it, and there is one full panel to every repeat. The wood is antique brown, amber and dark honey, satin-finished and seen flat, with a fine natural grain and hairline joints between the boards. The sheets butt edge to edge with no visible join. I picture it in a château library, or under the furniture of a Victorian parlour.
